Basics

Editing the transcript

The transcript comes in blocks, one per speaker turn. The recording plays beside it. Turn on Scroll transcript to follow playback to keep the block being spoken in view.

Jump around the recording

  • Click a block's timestamp to hear it from there.
  • Cmd+click (Ctrl+click on Windows) a word to jump straight to that word.
  • Open the player's settings menu (the gear) to change the playback speed. 1.5× is comfortable for most meetings when you're only checking the transcript.

Check the agenda sections

When the transcript and the agenda are both ready, Express Transcriber suggests where each agenda item starts. You don't have to start it. The Agenda sections panel shows how many suggestions are left to check.

Each suggestion sits above the block where it thinks the item starts, with the words that gave it away. For each one:

  • Accept marks the section there. You can still change which agenda item it is afterwards.
  • ↑ and ↓ move the start a block earlier or later, when the item really starts on the block before or after.
  • Dismiss removes the suggestion.

Check the next one jumps to the next open suggestion. Accept all accepts every suggestion that's left, which is fine when the first few you checked were right.

Find sections again suggests sections again, for example after you fix the agenda. Sections you accepted, set yourself or dismissed stay as they are.

When a section is missing

If an agenda item starts somewhere nothing was suggested, click the block where it starts, press Insert section and pick the item from the agenda.

Name the speakers

Speakers arrive as labels like spk_2. Open Speakers and give each label a name. Every block with that label updates at once.

Pick people from your Speakers list where you can, rather than typing a name. The list holds each person's full name, role (member, staff or public), titles for each body, and pronouns, and the draft uses all of these to name people the way your body does.

Typing a new name on a block renames that label everywhere, not just in that block. That's the quick way to fix a misspelled name, but it's the wrong way to fix a single block tagged to the wrong person.

Fix one wrong block

If one block belongs to someone else, use Move to and pick the right person. Only that block changes.

When two people speak in one block, click just before the second speaker's first word and press Split here. Then move the new block to the right person.

Fix a word everywhere

Names are the most common miss. Use find and replace to correct a misheard word across the whole transcript at once.

Saving

Edits save a couple of seconds after you stop typing. The status beside the tabs says Unsaved changes or All changes saved. Press Save edits to save right away.
